Magic
You know those memories that just stay with you through everything? Those “core” memories that help shape the type of person you are and want to be; whether good or bad…
I believe in magic. I believe in people being the magic. And the myth of someone trying to make all the children in the world happy? Yep, I believe in that too.
Some of the most vibrant memories I have from my childhood are centered around magical moments. I remember this one time when “Cupid” left little hearts under our pillows. The hearts had been cut out of card-stock, then had a plastic layer atop the cardstock; the two layers had been sewn together on the sides and bottoms to create a little pouch, and inside the pouch were a couple of treats. On the back of the heart were the words “You are SO loved!”
For the life of me, I can’t remember what treats were inside those hearts. What I do remember though is the excited heart-tripping-over-itself feeling when I found the gift. I remember the special feeling when I read the message. I remember the magic…
Let them be Children
I once read an article about the evils of letting your children believe in fictional characters. It said that by playing the role of Santa or the Easter Bunny or whoever else, you are lying to your children and teaching them to be untrustworthy. The article aslo talked about how by letting them live in a world of fantasy; life will be really hard on them when they get out in the real world.
I disagree with that article. Their point I can see, but I think they are wrong.
I remember the magic from my youth.
I remember the magic from my youth. However, I also remember the day I found out these magical characters were fictional; Santa, the Easter Bunny, Cupid, the Tooth Fairy, etc… You know what stands out the most about that day? The realization that my mom was magic. My mom was responsible for the excitement and special feelings created by these small but magical moments. Those special memories I will carry for life, are now that much more special because they were unselfish and loving acts of my Mom.
My children adore the excitement that comes with fun magical moments. They will only be children once and then they will be pushed out into a world of selfishness, greed, pain, and hurt. Why take away their youth? Why make them grow up before they are good and ready? I have to wonder why anyone would ever want their child to grow up any faster than they have to. Being an adult is hard, and as one I often find my own joy in the moments of magic I can create for my children. Why would I ever want to take away that opportunity from them? Why would I want them to be stuck in the hate of the “real world” as a child, instead of building a foundation of love and safety?
A foundation of Love and Safety
“A foundation of love and safety.” That’s what I want for my home. My biggest desire is to make my home a place where my children know they will always be loved and feel emotionally safe.
We don’t live in fairyland. Our home is full of hard real world moments.
By introducing them to magic, I am opening up their minds for imagination and creativity; and in the background, unbeknownst to them: I am also setting the foundation for many happy memories down the road that will show them just how much their Mama adored her time with them.
Is magic necessary to create such a foundation? No. However it does open up lots of other possibilities and open doors of creativity and wonder in their minds that I do want opened.
Magical Memory Makers:
Here are a couple fun, yet quick and easy, magical things (besides the big ones you already know) that I do in my home:
- The shoe fairy. The shoe fairy makes my life easier actually. If my kids are in pajamas, allergy medicines taken, and teeth brushed by thirty minutes before bed time; they can leave their shoes outside their bedroom doors. If they stay in their own bed’s all night, then the shoe fairy leaves a treat on their shoes. (I bought a huge bag of Frooties, and I leave one or two on said shoes each night).
- On St Patrick’s Day every year, Leprechaun’s dye our milk green and go pee in our bathroom toilets.
- Cupid leaves hearts with candy.
- We always make holiday goodies, like these cinnamon bread-sticks CinnaBunnies.
- Fairy door. We were given a fairy door and if the kids leave letters in it about their lives then a fairy will leave a letter in return. A fun magical pen-pal!
Non-Magical Memory Makers:
Whether you believe in letting your kids believe in magic or not, good memories with them are essential for creating a foundation of love and safety. Here are a couple fun activities we do in our house pretty regularly to help our family stay active and to create happy memories:
- Hiking. When the weather is good, a quick easy hike-walk or a long thigh-burning hike is always a great idea.
- Saturday morning cooking school. Often times on Saturday mornings, especially when the weather is bad, I teach my kids how to cook. Never anything hard or using sharp tools, but still fun for them. For example, a couple weeks back we learned how to read and then follow the recipe from a box of blueberry muffin mix. Simple and easy and they loved every second of it. Making the CinnaBunnies and the Cinnamon Bread-sticks in this post were another fun cooking activity we did together.
- Water fights. There is nothing so fun as hosing down your mom with water and actually getting away with it,
- Trampoline jumping. We spend a lot of time jumping and then we spend even more time running around in circles. Haha!
- Bed time stories and shadow puppet shows together.
- Dance Parties in the kitchen! Or living room or bedroom or whatever.
- Rock Climbing. Even my toddler loves it!
- Rollerblading. We often go to the park or just around the neighborhood. Rollerblading is even fun for the adults!
- Kayaking. We got a blowup Kayak off Amazon a couple years back and we all squish into it and then go for rides down the local “river” or across the lake.
- Berry picking. There are alot of wild berries that grow along one of our favorite hiking trails here. We love to go pick those berries and then cook something with them after.
CinnaBunnies and Cinnamon Bread-sticks
Okay I will get off my magic soapbox now and finally tell you how to make this delightful Cinnamon Bread-sticks creation!
To make the CinnaBunnies, once your dough is ready:
- Roll the dough into a long rectangle.
- Then cut 1 x 12 inch strips.
- Holding the strip by the middle, folded in half, twist the two sides around each other twice.
- Then lay flat on a tray and pull the “ears” of the bunny just a bit to make them more pointed and long at their ends.
- Use any leftover dough to roll into little balls and then place in the rounded part as a “tail”.
- Now, brush with butter and then sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar combination.
- Finally bake them and when finished with baking, then brush and sprinkle them one more time.
To make Cinnamon Bread-sticks with your dough:
- Roll the dough into a long rectangle.
- Then cut 1 x 12 inch strips.
- Starting at the top of your wooden dowel or kabob stick, create a rounded bubble over the end then wrap the dough around the stick spiraling down.

- Then let them rise.
