National Library Month with Cost Plus World Market
I recently had the fun opportunity to participate in Cost Plus World Market’s National Library Month Children’s Story Time Event.
Dear reader, you may think that based on my super fun and awesome personality, that reading to a bunch of children is right up my ally and comes natural to me…
Oh reader, you are too kind! The fact of the matter is, I was so incredibly nervous I had to binge eat on powdered donuts that morning and pre-read all of the books about a dozen times! Haha! However, the nerves went away when I stepped onto my stage (or in this case sat in my pink chair that just happened to match my incredible shoes exactly perfectly, unplanned! It was fate.).
I love books! Love them! I can honestly say that books were more of an influence on me than any other person or experience in my life. In my life I have read thousands (I am a bit of a speed reader so getting through a book in my spare-time over one or two days is fairly normal for me).
However, about 3 years ago (give or take a bit), I fell into a deep depression and I stopped enjoying things that had always brought me joy. I stopped reading. And with that; the world got even darker.
Then last summer while trying to get my 3rd grader to enjoy reading, I introduced him to the world of JK Rowling’s book Harry Potter. That has changed everything for him. It also reminded me once again of the magic that is found between pages. You may remember from my Cinnamon Twists post that I am a lover of magic.
Harry Potter and Butterbeer
In the Harry Potter books we often read of Harry drinking “Butterbeer”. My son became obsessed with the idea of Butterbeer and wanted to try it out so bad! A friend informed us that Starbucks has “Butterbeer” on their secret menu. So of course we dropped all, jumped in the car, and drove there immediately.
Turns out that the Starbucks version of Butterbeer has Toffee Nut syrup in it. Unfortunately two of my three kids have nut allergies. So that was no longer an option. Being the good mom that I am, Hahaha! I returned to Starbucks later and got a secret Butterbeer for me, myself, and I.
It wasn’t was I was imagining when I read about “Butterbeer”, but it was absolutely delightful! I then created a new version of the drink sans toffee nut syrup.
One day I will create the drink just like that drink what my imagination palate dreamt up, but until then; YOU HAVE GOT TO TRY THIS delicious warm cinnamon milk “Butterbeer”. It’s my kids very favorite treat.
Book Donations
So before I tell you how to make this fun treat I have to tell you more about my fun event with Cost Plus with World Market. It is so fun being one of their ambassadors! I was one of 20 bloggers across the entire country that got to participate in this awesome event. At each of the participating stores they had food and wine tasting and then the storybook lady; (in this case) me!
The children’s books in the store that day were all buy one GIVE one free! I love giving back to the community and children reading is a passion of mine because I believe so much hinges on that ability and the worlds and avenues that open in their minds when they read. We were able to have a bunch of books donated and I had the privilege of delivering and donating them to the library of a local school.
How great is that!
Favorites
I want to share with you some of my favorite reads. Before I do though, let me give a little disclaimer: I am an immature fairytale lover!
If the book has an unhappy ending then I don’t like it. I feel like I get enough of real life in real life and I want to go to a different world and a different life when I am reading!
Also, FYI- I don’t read books with sex scenes, so if that is your thing then you may not enjoy my favorite picks. My reason? I personally think stuff that happens in the bedroom should stay in the bedroom, even in books. I had sex, the character had sex; whatever! I don’t think anyone needs to know the details of that fun experience. IT’s enough to know that it happened if that is crucial story… My mind and brain doesn’t need the details. Keep it classy! Getting off my soapbox now…
