We recently had a week-long break from school. A vacation was in order so we planned a trip to the beach! Knowing I’d be the only adult in the car with three kiddos on a six hour drive, made my mind go,

“AH!!!!! I need a plan!”

Enter, road trip activity totes!

Welch’s Fruit Rolls

My kids love unrolling Welch’s Fruit Rolls and enjoy the taste even more. I love that fruit is the first ingredient and they have 100% daily value of Vitamin C and 25% daily value of Vitamins A & E.

So when I created this fun printable License Plate Bingo game for the car ride (click link to print), I decided a quick Walmart run was in order so I could have Welch’s Fruit Rolls in the totes as the prize for each time they get bingo. And if I’m being honest, which is something I highly suggest all people be, then I’ll admit I bought an extra box to keep up front for me. Haha!

They weren’t kidding when they said Welch’s Fruit Rolls have a delicious taste the whole family loves!

Road Trip Activity Bags

Other things I included in my activity totes were:

Water Bottles
Doodle Notebooks
Coloring books with colored pencils (I highly suggest colored pencils over crayons simply because if one of those crayons gets lost under a car seat and then your vehicle gets hot: melted wax is a bugger to clean!)
Personalized activity books. My son loves word puzzles and sudoku while my daughter loves dot-to-dots and word searches. I made sure to put a special personal activity book in each basket.
Stickers! (Kids love stickers! On airplanes I will cover my three year olds arms with stickers and she’ll spend half the flight peeling them off and reapplying them. However these stickers use was twofold: one just for the fun of stickers, and second they were used to mark off spots on the bingo board.)
Clipboards; so they had a hard surface to work on.
Wet wipes for sticky fingers
Books, for when coloring gets old, then it’s fun to entertain with books. I have one child that gets carsick, so rather than putting a book in her basket, I put one that both my older children will enjoy in my son’s basket, then he can read aloud. Another fun idea is an audible book.

Other things to consider for your Road Trip:

Food. I always take a picnic basket full of snacks for the road trip. They each had their special snacks in their road trip totes; but then I had a separate basket full of travel friendly foods such as pretzels, bagels, granola bars, veggie straws, crackers and a few more Welch’s Fruit Rolls because we just can’t get enough.
Plan ahead for pit stops! This is a must when traveling with kids. They’ll do a great job of keeping themselves busy with your activity totes, but everyone needs to get out, stretch their legs and use the restroom every now and then. Make those pit stops count! We run around the car ten times, do jumping jacks and play a game of tag before hitting the road again.
Schedules. If it’s gonna be a long one, then I like to start the road trip in the early morning hours. That way my kids will sleep through at least a couple hours of the trip. Then the first pit stop includes breakfast before we hop back in the car and break out those activity totes. This approach has really seemed to work well for us.

Sometimes you just need a break, to a place you love, to get away from everything… Take a vacation! Or two or three; make it a staycation and visit somewhere close even. Camping is always fun! Go as many places as you can. You can always make money, but something I’m learning with my kids everyday is you can’t always make memories! Take advantage of this time you have and hit the road, baby!
