April 22, 2019 by Tangled with Taste Leave a Comment

Thank you #MaggiesFarmPestControl for sponsoring this important (to all great at-home cooks out there!) post. We appreciate your support.

5 herbs your home garden should contain: Thyme, Basil, Cilantro, Parsley, and Thyme. Yep, thyme is so important it’s listed twice. Haha!

Y’all I am just going to put this out there right now: I have a black thumb. When it comes to plants and planting and growing things: I have the thumb of death.

Why do I tell you this? Because even I have been able to grow these herbs we’re going to talk about today. And I are them in my front walkway flowerbed. So that tells you how simple they are to grow. If I can do it: you can do it.

And friends? These herbs are everything! Dried herbs are great and all, but there are some herbs that having fresh can seriously make your dish taste like a culinary masterpiece; take it from good to gourmet.

Fresh Thyme

First, and my most favorite herb of all to keep in my garden (let’s just point out that I use that term “garden” very loosely- haha!), is thyme.

Y’all I use thyme daily. Literally multiple times a day sometimes! It is a ridiculously delightful herb. From throwing some fresh leaves in my morning eggs (drool!!!) to adding it to the oil when searing a steak: thyme and it’s subtle flavor make the cooking world a better place.

Some of my favorite recipes calling for thyme include:

  • French Ribeye
  • Cornish Hens
  • Melted Onions and Gruyere Cheese Dip
  • Beef Tenderloin
  • Green Salt Roasted Chicken
  • And more…

Seriously, thyme is the most well used and loved herb in this household. It smells divine and it flavors food in a subtle yet ingenious way.

Parsley

Let’s talk parsley! I feel like parsley gets a bad rap because back in the 80’s it was always used as a garnish. Y’all, parsley is so much better than a garnish! Grow it in your garden, then use it for maitre’d butter for topping steaks: that alone will make you the happiest eater on earth.

Friends, there are so many delicious uses for parsley. I’m partial to Italian parsley, but both that and regular curly leaf parsley lend a delicious vibrant punch of flavor to your food.

Some of my favorite dishes that I use parsley in, include:

  • Glazed Carrots (seriously, the parsley takes this dish from a 6 to an 11 out of 10!)
  • Lemon Cream Chicken
  • Filet Mignon with Herb Butter

Fresh basil and why you should grow it in your garden

Fresh Basil Recipes

Oh my goodness I love basil. Sometimes I’ll just pick a leaf to hold it in my hands and smell it and take little nibbles from it! I do the same with my chocolate mint: which by the way did not make it on this list only because it is an herb that gets used rarely, but my goodness it’s a yummy one!

However, were discussing basil! I think the go-to cuisine for using basil is typically either Italian food or Thai. I love it in both and find it to be very useful as an in the garden-herb.

Some of my favorite recipes that call for basil include:

  • Caprese Salad with Basil Foam (oh man this one is drool worthy!)
  • Creamy Tomato Basil Soup
  • BBQ Chicken Pizza
  • Homemade Lasagna
  • Red Curry Soup

Fresh Cilantro recipes

Oh man you guys! I cannot stress the amazingness of having fresh cilantro on hand!!! Grabbing a bunch to throw in homemade salsa or for a quick salad or sandwich. Using it to add life to so many different dishes: you will not regret having cilantro in your garden.

Recipe Ideas using Fresh Cilantro include:

  • Yellow Curry Noodle Soup
  • Mexican Street Corn (my favorite recipe on my site y’all!)
  • Chicken Bahn Mi Sandwiches
  • Spicy Shrimp Avocado Bites
  • Grilled Pizza
  • Steak Tacos
  • Pineapple Mango Pico de Gallo

Well now you know how fabulous and how many incredible uses there are for fresh herbs. Other fresh herbs I love to keep on hand, though they don’t get used quite as often as perhaps the others do, include:

  • Rosemary (Rack of Pork and more)
  • Tarragon (Chicken with Tarragon Cream Sauce)
  • Lemon basil (In all the curries!)
  • Chives (Deviled Eggs)
  • Dill (Homemade Ranch)
  • Sage (Ravioli and more)

One thing you may have noticed is that this post had images of Maggie’s Farm Pest Control Spray. That is because you definitely want to keep the bugs out of your herbs and garden!

Maggie’s Farm Pest Control Spray

You guys I could go on all day about how great Maggie’s Farm is, they have so many great and green products out there. I seriously go to Target and get the sprays for my garden, for my home, and even the mosquito foggers for when we have dinner parties or go camping. I won’t go on all day though, but I will tell you two important things:

  1. It works (Pest control products need to work. Without effectiveness, green products fail and consumers return to traditional non-green brands. Maggie’s Farm branded products work.), and
  2. It’s a better choice for your home (Maggie’s Farm green products are environmentally friendly and a better choice for children, pets and everyone in the home.)

So go get your sprays and plant that garden y’all!!!
